NHIS reports over 150 million registered electronic examinations

Over 150 million electronic examinations have been registered in National Health Information System (NHIS), including 6.6 million dental examinations, according to data from Information Services, which developed and implemented the platform. Since the beginning of the year, nearly 29 million electronic examinations have been recorded, with an average of 180,000 registered daily.

Analysis shows that in first seven months of 2025, citizens and patients most frequently visited general practitioners, with nearly 16.2 million examinations recorded, followed by cardiologists and pediatricians. The most common reasons for examinations were general medical examination, hypertensive heart disease, acute upper respiratory tract infection, and viral infection. In pediatric healthcare, the leading reasons for examinations, were regular check-ups and acute nasopharyngitis (runny nose).

Approximately 34,000 doctors from both inpatient and outpatient care, 10,672 dentists, 7,568 pharmacists, 2,737 veterinarians, 3,260 pharmacies, and 389 hospitals are currently using NHIS. Since the platform's launch at the end of 2020, total number of registered electronic health records has reached 562 million. The system processes around 750,000 electronic health records daily.

“In a remarkably short time, NHIS has become one of the most widely used digital platforms in Bulgaria, reflecting the need for publicity, transparency, and traceability of processes in healthcare sector,” said Boris Kostadinov, Director of Software Integration at Information Services. According to him, one of the goals of healthcare digitalization is to benefit patients by allowing real-time access to their health information and enabling personalized healthcare plan.

NHIS data shows that total number of issued electronic prescriptions exceeds 86 million, with over 10 million being so-called “white prescriptions” for diabetes and antibiotics. The platform for issuing electronic referrals, launched in early December 2020, has registered over 85 million electronic documents. Laboratory test results registered into NHIS have surpassed 75 million, and recorded immunizations have reached 8.7 million. Electronic hospitalizations are approaching 7.2 million.

“NHIS is a living system that continues to evolve dynamically based on feedback from patients, medical professionals, and other stakeholders, aiming to improve healthcare services in Bulgaria and provide better long-term quality of life for citizens,” said Boris Kostadinov.
