General practitioners (GP) have reviewed health records of nearly 15,000 people from their patient lists within just a month, after Information Services upgraded the functionalities of the portal doc.his.bg.
Through it, general practitioners have full access to their patients' examinations, referrals, results, vaccines, prescriptions, blood donations, hospitalizations, and documents from the 'Medical Expertise' module. Data shows that over 700 general practitioners from across the country use the platform's functionalities daily. The average time GPs spend reviewing a patient's record is 7.12 minutes, from which 92% of visits involving activity in more than one functionality of the portal.
The new functionality is part of the upgrade of the National Health Information System (NHIS) and became possible after successful consultations with the Bulgarian Medical Association (BMA) and the National Association of General Practitioners in Bulgaria (NAGPB).
"The access to the medical data entered in the patient's record, regardless of the source of funding, allows general practitioners to have more comprehensive information when prescribing treatment and to have better long-term monitoring of their patients' conditions," said Boris Kostadinov, Director of Software Integration Department at Information Services. Patients no longer need to carry paper documents for prescriptions, examinations, results, and other medical events to their general practitioner, which saves time and resources for both citizens and medical professionals. On the other hand, the risk of lost documents, incorrect transmission of information between patient and doctor, or inaccurate interpretation of results is minimized.
"General practitioners have been able to access their patients' health records through doc.his.bg since December 2024. Each GP can authorize themselves in the system at any time using their qualified electronic signature (QES) and thus gain access to the records of the citizens who are part of their patient list. Searching for patients in the portal is done by name or identifier (personal number). For each patient examination, the GP sees the full medical information – diagnosis, medical history, condition, accompanying documents (if any), source of funding, as well as when, where, and by whom the examination was performed. For issued prescriptions, the GP can check whether the patient has filled it and what was dispensed at the pharmacy, as well as how much time remains until its expiration date. For each hospitalization, the GP can track all the information entered by their colleagues in the hospital, including the submitted to the NHIS epicrisis. If the reason for the hospitalization is a childbirth, the GP can see additional information about the birth itself and the newborns.
Access to medical information through doc.his.bg is strictly controlled and monitored by the NHIS. In the “History Log” the patient can check at any time what information their general practitioner has accessed. The NHIS records and stores every action performed in the medical record, regardless of whether the action is by the patient, the general practitioner, a medical specialist, or another authorized person.
