More than 32 million applications been proceeded in the electronic prescription book system in less than 7 months. Information Services built and launched the module on July 1, 2021. The e-prescription book of patients with chronical disease completely replaced the previously used paper prescription book.
The total number of patients who have e-prescription books has reached 2.1 million and the newly issued already exceeds 40 000.
Thanks to this system over BGN 160 000 on paper costs have been saved to the patients with chronical disease, who are the most indigent and vulnerable part of the citizens, the company CEO Ivaylo Filipov said. According to him the electronic prescription books simplify the process as much as possible, reduce the time for patient care and the possibility of mistakes in prescribing and dispensing drugs.
Using the electronic prescription book citizens don’t need to buy a paper one, to take it to their general practitioner to fill it out and after that to wait at the regional health insurance fund (RHIF) office for verification. It is also not necessary to present it at the pharmacies for dispensing the necessary medicines. The e-book is registered and filled in the system by the general practitioner and the pharmacies have the relevant information related to the patient active chronic diseases and the prescribed medicines which are paid by the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF)
The system also updates the information regarding choosing a general practitioner and the patient does not need to attest the change at the RHIF. New diagnoses and old ones can also be entered in the e-prescription book.
So far, more than 180 000 patients have been electronically processed, which saves costs and time to patients with chronical disease. The data show that on average more than 160 000 applications per day are processed, which is 25 000 applications per hour. The average time to process the application is less than a second. The module is used effectively by over 8 000 doctors and pharmacists who have a contract with the NHIF.
The electronic prescription book system is Information Services’ another successful project and gives a strong impetus to electronization of processes in the field of healthcare, Ivaylo Filipov said.
