The total number of electronic prescriptions issued in the National Health Information System (NHIS) topped 2.7 million since the National System Integrator Information Services launched the centralized online system related to prescribing and dispensing medical products. The e-prescription module was officially launched on February 6, 2021.
Over 2.4 million prescriptions are fully or partially fulfilled in the pharmacy network, which accounts to some 90% of the total volume of issued e-prescriptions. Some 50,000 prescriptions are being issued daily, and in the last few days there has been a trend to grow to 80,000 prescriptions per day. Pharmacists have so far declined to fulfill only 53 electronic prescriptions.
"The impressive volume of issued electronic prescriptions in such a short period is another proof of the quality projects developed by Information Services," the Information Services` CEO Ivaylo Filipov said. According to him, the electronic prescription is not just a digital version of the standard paper prescription, but is a key element in building the E-health in Bulgaria. The electronicization of the process significantly reduces the risk of improper dispensing of controlled and reimbursed medicines and facilitates patients, general practitioners and pharmacies as much as possible.
The total number of doctors who have issued an electronic prescription exceeded 4,500, and nearly 2,500 pharmacies across the country have successfully connected to the system. The data show that more than 3,300 pharmacists successfully fulfill electronically prescribed medications to patients.
The e-referral platform also reports impressive results. Over 2,800 general practitioners work with the system and they have issued over 104,000 e-referrals. Most active in the issuance of e-referrals are general practitioners from Sofia, Plovdiv, Burgas and Varna. Some 90,000 patients have received an electronic version of the referral.
